The past is prologue.  Nancy Liebman and Jeff Donnelly recall significant events in the 40 year history of the Miami Beach National Register District. Nancy Liebman is a current Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL) board member and MDPL Executive Director from 1987 to 1991. Jeff Donnelly is a thirty year veteran of the MDPL tour program and founder of the MDPL Tour Guide Academy. Their recollections and reflections provide insights into the status of MDPL and the Art Deco District today. Biographies
Jeff Donnelly is the Public Historian of the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL). He holds a research doctorate from New York University in American Studies, with emphasis on urban history, literature and politics.
He served as an educator at Fordham and New York Universities as well as a lecturer in the American Studies Program at the University of Miami, a history teacher and department chair at Miami Country Day School and a Master Teacher in the Woodrow Wilson Foundation’s TORCH (Teachers Teaching Teachers) training program. He continues to contribute to the MDPL Art Deco + Mimo Tour Guide Academy, which he founded in 1990.  He uses the “city as school” methodology in his classes as well as the MDPL tour program. He is the co-author of Miami Architecture: An AIA Guide to Downtown, the Beaches and Coconut Grove, published in June 2010 and is a frequent reviewer for History/Miami, H-Florida and other publications.
Nancy Liebman has been a Miami Beach resident since 1958. In addition to being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she has served Miami and Miami Beach as a teacher, a PTA president, the Executive Director of Miami Design Preservation League, a Miami Beach City Commissioner, and chair of the MiMo Boulevard Association.  She founded Miami Beach United, a residents’ advocacy group, in 2012. Among the many highlights of her life she includes her role in shaping the preservation movement from 1979 to present day; serving as Advisor the National Trust for Historic Preservation and being a part of the group that brought Art Basel to Miami Beach.
