Odyssey Concert Season: Für Elise...On Edge

This program of piano music takes the listener on a journey to the outer edges of the human mind. Works that give free reign to the polarities of creative genius are heard alongside works that take a detailed look at specific psychological phenomena. Beethoven's famous Für Elise and his career-spanning Bagatelles op. 119 are performed along with Schumann's monumental Fantasy in C major, which was inspired by an original song of Beethoven’s. Juxtaposed with these pillars of the piano repertoire are three intense sound constructions of musical modernism: "Suicide in an Airplane" by Leo Ornstein, “Pandorum” by Scott Stinson, and "Hypochondriasis” by Nahyun Kim. Kim's work is one of the winning compositions of KMA’s 2018 Call for Scores for Emerging Women Composers. The program will be performed by pianists Akina Yura, Maria Sumareva, Redi Llupa, and Inesa Gegprifti.
Immediately preceding this program, our patrons will have the opportunity to attend the second Prelude Concert of our 2018-19 season, offered 30 minutes before the main program. The Prelude Concerts, a new initiative that builds off of our Young Talents Showcase, seek to discover and promote local pianists under the age of 18. The performers, selected through recorded auditions paneled by professional pianists and pedagogues, will perform for the patrons of KMA’s Piano Concert Series on some of Steinway Piano Gallery Miami’s finest instruments.
