Join us for the Nerd Nite Miami Museum Tour Presented by Ironhack!

Event Details

We're taking this show on the road! From April to August, Nerd Nite will be at a different museum around Miami each month. Never been to Nerd Nite before? Nerd Nite is an event during which several folks give fun-yet-informative presentations while the audience drinks along. (It's like the Discovery Channel… with beer!) Come grab a drink, learn something new, and hang out at Miami's museums with us!

Full Museum Tour Dates:
Wednesday, April 24th - Nerd Nite at HistoryMiami Museum
Wednesday, May 15th - Nerd Nite at Frost Science
Thursday, June 6th - Nerd Nite at PAMM
Thursday, July 18th - Nerd Nite at WEAM
Wednesday, August 21st - Nerd Nite at Vizcaya

This month we're at the HistoryMiami Museum. Here are the speakers and topics for the night:

1) Snake Oil: The $27 Billion Bullshit Industry
by George Tucker

Starting with the first patent medicine created in 1712, we briefly survey the history of questionable medicine. Then we'll explore the state of the modern snake oil industry: how products are created, who sells them, who buys them, and why is this allowed? What role does the FDA play? How can we protect ourselves from the hype hurricane that surrounds Oprah, Dr. Oz, and the ocean of affiliate marketers online?

George Tucker grew up in the Arkansas Ozarks where he learned how to dowse for water and hide from ghosts. After earning his Master's of Fine Arts in fiction writing from Florida International University, he used his master's level bullshitting skills to pilfer over $50 million from the naive by magically promising to make their dicks bigger."Why Your Friend's Homebrew Tastes Like Crap"

2) Why Your Friend's Homebrew Tastes Like Crap
by Geoffrey Shideler

We all know someone that has tried to make beer. They excitedly offer that homebrew to you, and sometimes it just doesn't taste good. Do you have the heart to tell them? What makes that beer different from commercial beer? With a little more understanding of the science behind fermentation (i.e., zymurgy), anyone can make great beer. Next time, you can gently tell your friend *why* their beer tastes like crap, then maybe make great beer yourself.
