Mdou Moctar is poised to become the next big guitar hero in African Tuareg music, following in the footsteps of Tinariwen and Bombino, his fellow countryman. Mdou Moctar hails from Niger in West Africa.

After underground success with his first release, the psychedelic Anar he was featured on the Sahel Sounds compilation Music from Saharan Cellphones and has gone on to release several acclaimed albums. He is one of the few original Tuareg singer/songwriters willing to experiment and push the boundaries of the genre at home and abroad. Mdou Moctar has been known for venturing into unique territories that his other Tuareg counterparts have not, including using autotune in his music and starring in a Tuareg version of Prince’s seminal film Purple Rain. Entitled Rain the Color Blue with a Little Red In It, it was in the first ever Tuareg language film. Over the past several years, he has become well known on the international circuit, playing high energy electrified music in festivals and venues across Europe and North America.
