Hearing Loss & beyond: Understanding CHILD Learning
CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION
Thirty to forty percent of children with hearing loss have one or more additional disabilities. Coexisting conditions may include cognitive disabilities, learning disabilities, or behavioral-emotional disorders. Specific learning disabilities including dyslexia, executive functioning problems, and processing speed difficulties are as prevalent in children with hearing loss asin the general population. How can we ensure that children who are deaf/hard of hearing are evaluated for these disorders when their academic performance is poor? The diversity of children with hearing loss creates challenges for teachers of the deaf/hard of hearing. Educational planning and intervention requires a multidisciplinary team including teachers, psychologists, therapists, and family members. This workshop will explore factors beyond hearing loss that can contribute to learning challenges, including a discussion on how to identify these difficulties, when to refer, and what strategies can be used to help these children. Breakout sessions will provide practical application of strategies and specialized instruction.
OBJECTIVES:
Attendees will:
Develop an understanding of learning challenges that co-occur with hearing loss.
Define Executive Function and how Executive Function skills are critical for child learning.
Learn to promote the development of Executive Function skills.
Identify foundational strengths and weaknesses for reading and math skills in children with Learning Disabilities.
Understand how reading and math challenges manifest as a secondary disability for students who are deaf/hard of hearing.
Describe formative assessments in the areas of reading and math.
Apply knowledge of Executive Function, Learning Disabilities, and learning challenges to the development of an Individualized Educational Plan including goal development and progress monitoring.
